Staff and Student Interaction Policies

Liberty International School has specific expectations under the “Professional Boundaries: Staff/Student Interaction Policy” that all individuals must read and agree to before beginning employment activities at the school.  Failure to comply with these policies may result in consequences ranging from an official reprimand to immediate dismissal from one’s position.  This policy contains information regarding general communication with students (e.g., using school email addresses and not personal email addresses) as well as the prohibiting of “friending” students on social media (or other similar actions).

Liberty International School will provide annual training on the mandated reporting requirements that comply with Federal and local laws. Mandated reporter training will also be provided to employees hired during the course of the school year. This training will include information that failure to report an incident of known or reasonably suspected child abuse or neglect, as required by Japanese laws, will be punishable by termination of employment and applicable Japanese laws.

Training is also provided for staff and employees who have extended contact with age groups that may have a higher probability of having an accident in the bathroom.  Consequently, the training provides guidelines for cleaning the child in general and around the area of reproductive organs.

Recruitment Process

Liberty International School takes safeguarding our student scholars seriously.  This means taking multiple measures to ensure that all employees and personnel who may work with children are, indeed, safe to work with. Therefore, before hiring personnel, Liberty International School will do the following:

  • On our job applications, make a clear declaration that our school adheres to child safeguarding policies and explain that all individuals will undergo screening to verify their identity.

  • All applicants will be required to have criminal background checks conducted.  Moreover, all employees must undergo background checks every five years.

  • We will conduct a “live contact” reference check of at least 2 references via phone, Zoom, or face-to-face meeting.  Furthermore, one of the references must be from a direct supervisor.

  • Contact with references must occur using searchable or reliable business email or phone numbers.

  • References will be asked about the applicant’s safety with respect to children.
